Now You Can Buy A Plastic-Free Pregnancy Test

For much of the last 30 years, the pregnancy test has remained the same. Another piece of bulky, overpackaged plastic, much of it bound for the landfill. Now, Lia is here to shake up the feminine care industry with a truly game-changing product.

Six years in the making, Lia is the first plastic-free, biodegradable pregnancy test on the market. Not only is it compostable, but you can flush it as well, making for an eco-friendly and innovative bit of wonder.

According to Lia founders Bethany Edwards and Anna Couturier, pregnancy tests generate over 2 million pounds of plastic every year. Sure, plenty of folks out there are excited about getting pregnant, but that’s not 100% of those getting tested and a more discreet method that you can simply flush would be welcomed by many. You could wrap your test in some toilet paper and stuff it in the bottom of the trashcan, but that doesn’t mean you’re meeting the privacy needs of consumers.

The test gets made from similar plant fibers you’d find in toilet paper—all cellulose and none of the plastic or glass fibers you’d find in the typical kit. It also functions just like other offerings on the market—pee for five seconds on the collection pad, lay the test flat, remove the tear tab, and you can see your results in minutes. The test weighs less than four sheets of toilet paper and breaks down in your toilet much the same way. Additionally, the test is 99% accurate and will break down completely in just ten weeks, unless, of course, you decide to save it for your scrapbook.

The packaging for the brand is just as discreet. The blue-green packaging features subdued symbols, the perfect stand-in for your favorite 4-letter swear word of choice, along with a black exclamation point. Opening the envelope, you're greeted by the simplest of copy, imploring you to "pee, see, and flush."

Lia officially launched earlier this past March, and the Time Best Invention is available for purchase now.
