Sweet Dirt Cannabis Practices What They Preach With Packaging Designed By Pulp+Wire

Published

Because Sweet Dirt Cannabis is so attentive to the root of the cannabis flower as well as the quality, it only makes sense that Pulp+Wire would design a packaging system that reflects it. Through naturally-inspired motifs, copper foil, and typography that tells a more extensive story, the packaging system for Sweet Dirt is as fresh as the flower within.

Additionally, Pulp+Wire created the packaging system by ensuring that all folding box materials were developed, produced, printed with wind power, grown, packaged, and sold within less than a 100-mile radius. Sweet Dirt Cannabis sustainably practices what they preach and puff.

Sweet Dirt cannabis is organically grown in living soil and hand-trimmed with care, offering premium flower strains, topicals, edibles, tinctures, and extracts. For the Sweet Dirt redesign, Pulp+Wire, based in Maine and founded and run by Taja Dockendorf, was tasked with a goal to maintain quality but tell a clearer story about the brand. The team wanted to create a magical moment in which the consumer felt like they were unearthing a gem from the fertile ground. The ensuing packaging design reflects Sweet Dirt’s passion and patience to nurture plants to their potential without additives, fillers, or toxins.

Focus on sustainable materials and waste reduction processes:

Key elements of the design include the selection of the paper board—C1S by Sappi from their Proto line—selected for its ability to hold multiple finishes, including embossing, metallic Pantone inks, copper (solvent-free and recyclable) foil, and a soft-touch finish. Pulp+Wire also selected metalized film for the bags and labels with a spot opaque white to allow for copper metallic accents along with a flexible labeling system. They also used specialized dielines to maximize the sheet and reduce waste.

Keeping a small footprint:

Pulp+Wire was able to design a product where all folding box materials were made, produced, printed with wind power, grown, packaged and sold in a less than 100-mile radius. The whole project was not only designed in Maine by P+W for Sweet Dirt, a Maine grower and producer, but also printed in Maine by J.S. McCarthy Printers in August using 100% certified wind-power, and using Proto stock (with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry) made only a few miles away by Sappi Paper Mill in Skowhegan, Maine.
