It’s fast approaching that time of year when many of us reflect on the past 365 days and look ahead to the next 12 months.
Closing the books on 2020 was quite a feat, and many of us were looking forward to a literal change in pace, but then the year kicked off with a bang, the pandemic kept kicking our teeth in, and TikTok showed little sign of slowing down with the memes.
Candlemaker Flaming Crap is recapping 2021 in scent form with the aptly named “2021 Candle.” The kerasoy vegan candle takes bits of the cultural zeitgeist and layers them together, creating a layer cake summary of the past year. Of course, it all starts with a TikTok meme, and the first layer is raspberries and cream, followed by honeycomb, inspired by this year’s Netflix hit Squid Game and its dalgona drawing challenge. A nod to #FreeBritney, the next layer’s scent finds inspiration in Spears’ “Fantasy” fragrance, a perfume from the halcyon days of 2005. Finally, The 2021 Candle ends with the smell of COVID vaccines.
The paper label is recycled and depicts each layer horizontally with a simple “The 2021 Candle” placed over them (basically, barebones Photoshop skillz). The candle has a 30 hour burn time, or about 7.5 hours per layer, giving purchasers plenty of hours to ponder next year’s resolutions while wondering just what it is that the smell of COVID vaccines reminds them of.
