Banzai BZ#19-01 Collector's Box Is Timeless And Functional

BZ#19-01 is a limited edition reissue celebrating one of the most iconic skateboard designs of the 1970s. Being both a priced collector’s item and a bare utility product, the packaging needed to serve as a display case and a functional product-set at the same time. Each board comes with a custom assembly tool and a signed art print by artists like David Carson, Jay Nelson, or Nathaniel Russell.
The Challenge:
Given two very different target audiences - one being a young demographic interested in using the skateboard, and another being of older age and rather driven by nostalgia – the challenge was to create a packaging which presented the timeless aluminum board as a valuable collector’s item while equally maintaining its use as a functional and high-end utility product.
The Solution:
By designing a comprehensive assembly set (as opposed to a fully mounted board) we were able to leave the choice of use up to the consumer and maintain a valuable collector’s aesthetic while giving the functional character of assembly a more ceremonial quality. Furthermore a custom tool was designed (see leather case) and all technical supplements (hardware, etc.) were kept out of sight.
