The First LEGO and IKEA Collaboration Is Here To Help You From Stepping On Your Child's Bricks

by Bill McCool on 08/27/2020 | 3 Minute Read

If you know the exquisite pain of stepping on a LEGO while pleading with your children to clean their damn room just ONCE during this debacle that is WFH, and then watch your own flesh and blood that you unconditionally love laugh in your face as you hop around in pain, then I only want you to know that I see you, I hear you, and I can commiserate.

So, once you get that brick lodged firmly in your heel removed, might I point you in the direction of the latest collaboration from LEGO and IKEA? Dubbed the Bygglek, or what I like to call product-name-by-way-of-Ouija-board, both of the brands designed a storage solution for parents tired of loose LEGO landmines.

Now, bruised and bloodied parents can purchase a series of storage containers in various sizes that come with LEGO studs along the top and sides, a move meant to stimulate play and put a little more fun in cleaning and storage, which, I don’t know, good luck convincing the rabid beasts I call my children with that. The Bygglek range features one set of three smaller containers as well as two sets of much bigger boxes.

Additionally, IKEA will release a special 201-piece LEGO brick set in stores as well.

“At IKEA, we always believe in the power of play. Play lets us explore, experiment, dream, and discover,” said designer at IKEA of Sweden Andreas Fredriksson in a press release. “Where adults often see mess, children see a stimulating creative environment, and BYGGLEK will help bridge the gap between these two views to ensure more creative play in homes around the world. Plus, the BYGGLEK collection match perfectly with other IKEA products, making it possible to have your children’s creativity becoming a nice and unique piece of decoration at home.”

The largest of IKEA’s offerings will come in a flat-pack with easy instructions for children to build themselves.  Additionally, much of the packaging does away with the photoshoot of Christmas dreams aesthetic that LEGO heavily relies on, and favors an IKEA minimalism of sorts. That’s what Swedes do after all, right? I’m amazed they have anything in their homes, let alone launching a global furniture brand that also sells delicious, delicious Swedish meatballs and marinated herring. But I digress.

The boxes feature lounging LEGO people, ostensibly kicking back and eating hotdogs, something I won’t be doing because I will be busy cleaning up the LEGO pieces that didn’t make it into the Bygglekpuhdabbywhatsitsface.

The newest collection is already available throughout IKEA Europe but will come to North America starting October 1st.
