The Volcano Vaporizer Turns Twenty, Gets The 24K Gold Treatment

In 1996, German graphic designer Markus Storz came upon an article describing a way to consume cannabis without smoking by vaporizing the buds. Intrigued by the concept, Storz built a prototype using a heat gun. Dissatisfied with the resulting carbon particulates emitted by his initial vaporizer, Markus refined his design, creating the iconic Volcano in 2000. Later in 2002, he partnered with friend Jürgen Bickeland formed Storz & Bickel GmbH & Co. KG, transforming the way we get high.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first set of Volcano vaporizers, Storz & Bickel released a limited edition 24 karat gold-plated vaporizer. With just 100 in existence, each of the elite Volcanos is engraved, numbered, and signed. Other pieces of the devices, like the filling chamber inserts and screens, are also gold-plated. The luxurious finish gets complimented by a black base and controls and looks supremely luxe.

The limited-edition Volcano comes exquisitely packaged in a collectors-level box with additional accessories such as a T-shirt, 20th-anniversary brochure, and documentary on a USB drive. The outer packaging gets finished in a slick black with a golden device depicted on the front and a technical diagram on the top. The packaging alone is display-worthy, almost as much as the actual device blinged out.

Standard-issue Volcanos have always commanded a premium price worthy of a high-tech and well-designed cannabis consumption device, currently priced at just under $500. The 20th Anniversary edition will cost a little more than double, €1,000 or about $1,200. The firm is also releasing a Volcano Classic Gold Edition, which features a gold-plated hot air generator for €599.

Anyway, here’s to treating yourself.
