Blue Point Brewing Releases Garbage Pail Kids-Inspired Beer

Memory is a tricky thing for the human mind and, as it turns out, they don’t work like saved files on a hard drive, bits of information saved as they happened preserved for time immemorial.
Our memories can spark nostalgia, and sometimes that appreciation for the past inspires something new, as is the case with Blue Point’s latest beer, Bubble Brain.
Bubble Brain is a small batch bubble gum beer whose flavor is driven by fruit, spices and yeast. Brewmaster Mike Stoneburg set out to create a drink challenging people’s perception of flavors one can find in a beer, and while Bubble Brain is an experiment in unique tasting profiles, the can’s label is an exercise in nostalgia that taps into the 80s iconic staple Garbage Pail Kids.
Garbage Pail Kids are a series of trading cards made by Topps that parodied Cabbage Patch Dolls, a massively popular line of toys in 1985 when the first Kids series debuted. On a recent trip home, Stoneburg was struck by nostalgic inspiration upon browsing a store’s collection of cards.
“I’ve always loved the Joe Blow and Rod Wad cards that are spoofs on Bazooka Joe, and those cards got me thinking about sour, fruit-forward IPAs,” Stoneburg says. “What would a Bubble Gum-flavored beer taste like having fruit and sourness and chewiness all wrapped up in it? But then there was the question, what is bubble gum flavor even comprised of?”
Blue Point went to longtime Garbage Pail Kids artist Brent Engstrom for the packaging design that features an unnamed Garbage Pail Kid walking around a brewery with a sticky wad of gum strung between his boot and the floor. Bubble Brain’s character found inspiration by classics like Adam Bomb, but Stoneburg says that Bubble Brain’s “kid” is a caricature of him.
Part of the fun of Garbage Pail Kids are the funny names, which typically feature puns or rhymes. When asked what Bubble Brain’s character is, Stoneburg says they didn’t think of one but offered a suggestion.
“We didn’t have a particular name in mind, but ‘Stoney Bologna’ seems to do the trick,” he laughs.
Bubble Brain is a limited batch of beer and available now.
