HiBAR Wants To Replace Your Plastic Shampoo Bottle With Solid Hair Products.

Nearly every shampoo out there has two things in common; they contain water and get shipped in plastic bottles.

It’s not hard to see why. Paper cartons aren't ideal for bathroom storage, and glass is heavy and dangerous if broken in the shower. Plus, liquid shampoo is easy to apply. But these conveniences come at a price, chiefly in the form of plastic and additional greenhouse emissions that come from shipping a lot of water around.

One group of friends decided to work on eliminating plastic shampoo bottles while also providing a chemical-free, vegetable-based and salon-quality product. Enter HiBAR, a line of solid shampoos and conditioner that is entirely plastic-free. When stored properly (dry, and away from direct water contact), each bar lasts about as much as a 16oz bottle of liquid shampoo. The bars come in one of three varieties, Clarifying for normal or oily hair, Moisturize bars for thicker or dry hair, and Volumizing bars for thin, fine, or lifeless hair.

Taking the water out shampoo and conditioners allows for paper packaging that is not only recyclable but safe to compost. The ink used on the package is also plant-based, and shipping materials are recyclable, compostable or biodegradable, including the packing tape. As another added benefit, you can breeze through airport security with it, as HiBar recommends wrapping up the bars in a face towel and packing along with your clothes.

By starting with a goal, removing plastic from the bathroom, four friends set out to rethink shampoo and conditioner within the context of our plastic pollution crisis. HiBar is the latest example of companies successfully integrating sustainability into their products as a design requirement.
