KIND Asks FDA to Make Nutrition Labels More User Friendly

A common approach to standing out on the shelf from your competitors is to loudly indicate the healthy attributes of your food on the package, whether you’re paleo, organic or vegan. A decidedly less conventional tactic to attract consumers is to call-out the high amounts of sugar, trans fats, or other unhealthy ingredients. That’s why boring nutrition labels exist in the first place.

KIND, makers of snack bars and other treats, has formally asked the FDA to change this practice of only highlighting health-positive attributes while relegating the less healthy to the fine print. Moreover, KIND is recommending the FDA require companies to ask consumers to see nutritional information when the item is high in fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, added sugars.

Furthermore, KIND also suggests that foods which wish to make a positive claim must not exceed 25% of daily recommended values for added sugars and fats. They’d also like to see foods fortified with nutrients such as added fiber and vitamins have disclosure as well along with added sugar and trans fat content disclosed on the front of a package.
