Shinola Opens A Boutique Hotel in Downtown Detroit

Shinola is becoming a modern-day Renaissance brand with a specialty for authentic creation.
Now, not only do they produce one-of-a-kind watches, bicycles, and handbags made in the US, they’re also aspiring hospitality connoisseurs as they dive into their newest project Shinola Hotel with Bedrock Manufacturing, a management firm based in Plano, Texas.
Opening its doors to the public on January 2nd, Shinola's boutique hotel is made up of130,000 square feet between five buildings in Detroit’s Woodward Avenue shopping district, two of which are restored historic buildings.
To decorate the six restaurants and bars, venue spaces and 129 guest rooms, Shinola brought on New York-based collaborative design studio Gachot Studios and high-end interior design and architecture firm Kraemer Design Group. Together, they successfully transformed the space by marrying the history of the old with the vibrancy of the new.
The lounge features several different cozy corners, each with various pieces of furniture in corresponding colors and art curated by Library Street Collective on the wall. San Morello, one of the restaurants in the hotel, is decked out with brown suede booths, blue and white cushioned chairs and gorgeous wooden brown tables. The Grand Hall is all hardwood floor with racks on racks of chandeliers, and the rooms alternate in 50 different configurations.
“Instead of cutting up the rooms into standard boxes,” says Gachot Studios principal Christine Gachot, “we decided to embrace the irregularity of the existing buildings.”
The only similarities throughout every room are the 100% cotton, 300-thread-count bed linens from Frette and the strategically placed Shinola goodies.

“The brand (Shinola) was built by the city and its people, so we pieced every aspect of the hotel together with Detroit in mind,” says Shinola’s creative director Daniel Caudill.
