While it might look just like any other container, this Tetra Pak carton is going to have quite a significant impact. Earlier this month, Tetra Pak announced its first packaging in the U.S. made entirely from renewable materials: paperboard and sugar cane derived plastics. This isn’t news for Europe, as this innovative gable top packaging has been available since January 2015, but Tetra Pak has taken the bio-based packaging and adapted it for the American market.

Carmen Becker, president and CEO at Tetra Pak Inc. states, “Environmental excellence is one of Tetra Pak’s strategic priorities and a driver of our product development activities. We’re proud to be the first to offer a fully renewable carton package to the U.S. market and believe that increasing the renewable content of our packages is not only good for the environment, but also offers our customers a competitive advantage.”

To put renewable materials—natural resources that can be replenished over time—at the forefront of the design is an indication of Tetra Pak’s commitment to provide environmentally sound products to the world. They operate in over 80 countries and provide packaging solutions to over 170 countries. By raising the bar for packaging and simultaneously lowering its impact on the world, Tetra Pak is creating a new standard for packaging companies everywhere.

The Tetra Pak Gable Top Bio-based package is designed to additionally make the transition for clients easy. It will be possible to switch to the new bio-based version without any additional investment on their part or any modification to the machines they currently use to fill products, making it easy for companies to go green.

“The Tetra Pak Gable Top Bio-based package follows a long line of successful innovations in sustainability at Tetra Pak, including the launch of the fully renewable Tetra Rex Bio-based package in Europe, the global launch of the industry’s first bio-based cap and the successful introduction of bio-based coatings for all packages produced in Brazil.”

“The outstanding environmental profile of Tetra Pak’s fully renewable package continues to garner international attention. In the last year, it has been recognized with seven awards, including first place in the Sustainable Innovation category at the Ethical Corporation Responsible Business Awards. Tetra Pak now expects to deliver globally more than 100 million of these fully renewable packages to customers in 2016.”
