Coffee culture is strong in Washington state. This can be a double edged sword for new independently owned coffee shops — a balance must exist between standing out amongst the competition and acknowledging the honest needs of the customer. Partly Sunny worked with Bluebeard Coffee Roasters from their inception to help establish the brand regionally and develop a strong retail presence.

“Tacoma, Washington’s Bluebeard Coffee Roasters has quickly become one of the most beloved brands in the south Puget Sound, with some of the finest specialty roasts available. But not long ago, it didn’t exist. And together we stared down the daunting task of launching a new coffee brand in region that is famously over-caffeinated. Standing out was a given. But equally important was fitting in with the independent spirit of Tacoma, a port city historically known for its lively demeanor.”

“Bluebeard was the perfect concept to reflect this with style and wit. The swarthy character offers a playful nod to the city’s storied past. The simple lines of his swirly beard resemble coffee steam, ocean surf and vintage ironwork. And though the virtue of this mythical figure may be questionable, the integrity of their coffee is beyond reproach.”

Although Bluebeard is a newly launched company, the branding gives the appearance of an established coffee roaster. The navy blue and white of the packaging look beautifully polished together, letting us know that Bluebeard Coffee Roasters takes their coffee seriously. Bluebeard’s website and other marketing materials are clean and and straightforward with a modern-looking sans serif font. Individual elements combine to communicate that Bluebeard is something fresh and different, but still a roaster you can trust.

The design of our brand identity and packaging has set a high standard that we strive to live up to. And the iconic bearded wonder gets universal raves on a daily basis.”
