Baba Yaga Absinthe

Published

“Enrobed in the shadows of towering cedars lurks Baba Yaga, an iron-toothed witch and master of the elements.” This chilling description for Arbutus Distillery’s newest product, Baba Yaga absinthe, is merely the start of the curious journey that package design takes you on. Hired Guns Creative incorporates small and meaningful details to the sleeve and bottle itself.

“The bottle sleeve for Arbutus Distillery‘s newest product includes four inverted skulls hidden in the negative space made by the chicken-feet trees. (Once you see them, you can’t un-see them.) Having all of the legally-required info on the sleeve freed us up to create a gnarly front label: a wicked, toothy grin that uses two foils and embossed details on the teeth.”

Something about the disturbing smile on the bottle is equal parts creepy and enticing. The fine details — like the roots that create skull shapes, the gradual fading colors from yellow to green, and even the texture on each tooth — make Baba Yaga an exquisite yet eerie adventure.
