Q&A: What software for packaging design?

Steph Shook asks,

What software do you recommend for packaging design? Currently I am using illustrator, but I have read that CAD software can enhance my workflow?

Sunny Bonnell of Motto answers,

There are some great software programs such as Esko for Illustrator, which I use when I want to fold up dielines or rotate artwork in a 3D environment. I’ve also experimented with Cinema 4D. Both of these programs are excellent tools for packaging designers and can help you move from working with flat files to a more integrated, interactive view of your packaging artwork. I also work with a photoshop and illustrator expert who specializes in taking our packaging work and turning them into photorealistic mockups, which is also quite useful. Hope that helps!
